River Trip

With school in, I've been fishing less and less, but still every other weekend type stuff. So a friend and I decided that this weekend we would put off studying for exams and go on a river trip, starting from the upper little wekiva and going to the wekiva marina. We have done this before, usually stopping at shell island, and for anyone who doesnt know, is a great place with a rope swing and a clear, deep hole to drop into. Little did we know that the little Wekiva was jammed the whole way from 100 yards past the launch site all the way to the wekiva. took along my 5-foot UL spinning rod as an afterthought, as we would be going to fast to really fish. (however, i did lose and 8-lbs. plus bass the last time I fished there).

This is the place where we launched, in a friend's backyard on the little wekiva. the Canoe is mine, a 16 footer, and the Kayak is borrowed.

little down the river

at one spot, there were so many trees we decided to take a back creek that went through this, and yes, we made that trail. I stood in the back of the canoe and pushed through with a kayak paddle while my friend in front did the same. then at the end of that was another tree.

after a while.........

open water!! finally, once we got past the little wekiva's snag heaven, we entered the wekiva. by then the wind was killing us, but still.....and then we had a nice chat with a DEP man who was kind enough to give us a written warning for no PFD's.

I know I look like an Idiot.....

now for an interesting story....last time we did this we had time to kill and we went up rock springs and back with the current, standing on the back of the kayak and canoe. this time, we, or i, tried it on the way there, against the current and wind, which were both unusually strong for that particular place. i was getting blown to the bank, so i had to paddle hard to keep straight, all the while standing on the back of a kayak. after a short while, down i go, into the deep segment of the river past the marina. I lost my UL pole, worth 35$. then we ended at the marina, and kind of had a hard time getting home after haning out at the marina for a while.

Long Time No post

I apologize for how inactive this blog has been, but Ill be keeping it up to date now.

I have been fishing.
One of the trips we went offshore, out of ponce inlet. slow day, but still fun. 4 sharks.

many, many bass, mostly on castnetted shiners, some in Lake Sylvan in Seminole county.

I have been out west on family vacation, and I have never missed florida fishing more. All we caught were tiny bream and small trout.

Keys Trip Report

This june, me and a bunch of guys went on High Adventure to Key Largo, John Pennekamp. A few of us dived (Mollassess and the Elbow) four times while the rest snorkeled. Great dives, with sharks, jewfish, sea turtles, rays, and the usual fish. The first day we were catching small snapper with shrimp, and then that night it picked up, with more snapper, only one keeper, a lobster (that was a good fight compared to the little snappers I'd been catching), and pinfish.

The next night it got a little crazy.

after no luck of cuda tubes off the beach, three of us got some frozen whitebait, and figured it would be good for some bottom feeders. at dusk we were under a bridge, and to make a long story shortish, were killing them. there was a floating dock near a bridge, with clear water and good current. Near first cast I hooked up with a 25" snook, no picture. it had worn all the way through my 20-lbs. leader right as I landed him. After snapper by myself and others, all keeper, I hooked a little jack. Then, one of the other guys, hooked a SLOB snook, using no leader, just straight braid. That snook just took off, and then came back, and jumped over a corner of the dock, and cut the line. That hurt, and i was just watching.

So I cast up current with a whole bait and a big hook and let it sit, and all of a sudden the rod is nearly jerked out of my hands, and a freight train is peeling out drag like i have never felt. It took me about a hundred yards, and then came straight back. I couldnt tell if it was off or what, but i guessed it might come back and i reeled as fast as i could. good thing. the line gets tight again, and he comes up right under me, and the leader breaks. he was a three foot blacktip, on 20 lbs. leader. Later that night, we hooked up with the same one again, with a steel leader, and got him. We knew it was the same one because of the hook and my power pro wrapped around the line. crazy fight.

Great trip, with more fish caught, but those were the highlights.

May Indian River Lagoon

We left at 4:30 this morning to fish Haulover Canal and the Indian River Lagoon. We Stopped at a little creek from Haulover to the Lagoon for snapper. This one is an inch or two short, caught on live shrimp.

after fishing the little creek we went out over some flats. The water quality was excellent, with healthy sea grass, and more importantly, many fish. We passed over a few redfish, but couldn't coax a bite. I started wading to get closer and hooked this ray .

On top of the rays, we caught a million puffers and pinfish. for those of you who do not saltwater fish, these are trash fish, but they still put a bend in the rod.

My dad landed this trout on a fairly deep grass flat with a live shrimp.

We caught another trout about the same size, and then a dink trout.

After getting tired of the puffers, we cut up some pinfish for bait and hoped for redfish in the canal. while we were waiting for them to bite, we threw small shrimp to the rocks for sheepshead. They were small but still fun.

We never got any bites on the cut pinfish, and we kept losing hooks and sinkers to the rocks.
We decided to use our last few shrimp and go back to the flats, but by then it was early afternoon and windy. because I was sitting in the bow of our motorized gheenoe, I got soaked on the way there. Our reward: Puffers.
Still, it was a good trip. No redfish though.

Tiny Pond Bass

After my Lacrosse Game today, I grabbed a my two piece Shakespear Ultralight with 4-lbs. test. I went to a little pond down the road that I had never thought of Fishing. I got there, and it was not looking good. it looked very shallow, but, not wanting to give up, i tossed a small gold rooster tail because I was seeing small minnows. after no hits on the rooster tail, I rigged a red shad (my favorite worm color) trick worm rigged weedless as far as I could cast. Bass, maybe a pound. Not bad for three in the afternoon in a half hour.

Report-Big March Bass

My Dad and I "snuck out" for an hour or two in the evening to hit one of my favorite spots. no one ever fishes here, as access is limited, and it is a river, unlike most what most Bassers are used to fishing.

so we start out with 10-lbs spinning outfits and 4-lbs. ultralight spinning. I get two bass, barely a pound, on the 4-lbs. ultralight.

I then I put a gold Rapala Floater on the 10-lbs. spinning, catch a bream shorter than the lure.

Another cast and then fish on! She nailed that and swam down river, but we eventually landed her.

Previous Trip Report

just for some substance on this blog, will post my last report.

Report One

my least favorite lake to fish, but i was forced to fish it because of no other available place that day. the lake is overall good, but the only shore access is heavily fished, unlike most of my spots.

anyway, i was trying to fish for catfish, since i had heard of some in there, with earthworms and stinkbait. no luck. after only two bream on nite crawlers, and no bass either on a texas rigged plastic worm or a spinnerbait, i castnetted this ugly exotic:

I had castnetted some shad as well, and we freelined them off the dock. while we were castnetting, a huge Mudfish (bowfin) grabbed the shad. what ticked me off, however, was that some taking a walk around the lake saw the rod bouncing, fought the mudfish, and stole the hook.
